“We’ll discuss the possibility that intelligent life on another planet may be no larger than a flea,” says Dutton. His students laugh. “Perhaps no larger than a bacterium.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TITLE: THIRD DAY<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hall is asleep at his desk. A tone sounds twice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Time to wake up, sir,” says a voice. “Time to wake up, sir.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hall wakes up and looks around his quarters. “Hello?” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Time to wake up, sir,” repeats the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Why are you?’ asks Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Time to wake up, sir,” repeats the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hall squats by a speaker on the wall and presses a button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Do you wish something, sir?” asks the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Your name,” replies Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Will that be all, sir?” asks the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“For the moment,” replies Hall, stroking the speaker. He stands up and looks at the clock. It’s slightly after 4 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
