In the Scoop control room, Leavitt aims the camera inside the satellite. She raises her eyeglasses for a moment, rubs her eyes, and looks up at the large wall monitor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The monitor shows the slowly moving field of view inside the capsule as shown by the microscanner, labeled “20 x”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stone watches the same display on the other wall monitor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Hold it,” says Stone. The camera pauses. “At the edge of that shadow – – I think–“<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Me too,” says Leavitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It’s an indentation,” says Stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Yes,” agrees Leavitt. “About the size of a pencil point.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Go to forty,” says Stone. Leavitt punches buttons. The scene magnifies. There’s a small bean-shaped rock in the indentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
