“Let’s go back to the rock and see it at four-forty,” says Stone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leavitt punches a few buttons. The rock is lit at the edges, with a glowing green gel in a large crevasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If that’s a meteor, it’s a damned peculiar one,” says Stone. He walks toward the monitor. “This… left border, over here — it’s smooth! Almost like an artificial surface.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Painted, maybe,” says Leavitt, weakly. “Luminous paint?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If I keep watching it, I might think so,” replies Stone. “Wet paint sign and all.” Stone turns away from the monitor. As he does so, the green blob flashes white and expands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Jeremy,” says Leavitt, blinking. She’s not sure what she just saw. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What?” asks Stone. The green blob is now motionless again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leavitt leans her head forward and rubs her eyes. “Nothing,” she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You okay?” asks Stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It’s just my eyes are getting tired,” replies Leavitt. “We’ve been at it for five hours straight.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We’ll take a caffeine break in a minute,” says Stone. “First, though, I’d like to see one of the separate green patches at a thousand.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
