Stone takes the container holding the Andromeda slice, opens a hatch on a metal tube, and inserts the container into the tube. He closes the hatch and turns a knob on the side of the tube. The container travels to Dutton’s workstation at the electron microscope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Sample in the button and sealed, Charlie,” says Stone to Dutton. “Start the vacuum pump.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dutton throws a switch, starting the chugging sound of the vacuum pump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leavitt appears on a video screen. “Stone, can I see you?” asks Leavitt. “I have the results of the growth cultures.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No, we can’t leave now,” says Stone. “We have an Andromeda cell in the E-M.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stone turns to Dutton. “Okay, Charlie, let’s put it on the screen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dutton turns a knob and presses a button. On the large monitor with a caption that says “79,000 X”, a geometric pattern appears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Let’s run it through the computer for contrast expansion,” says Stone. Dutton throws a few more switches. The scene changes to full-color, with the same geometric pattern in green and the caption now saying “CON EX: 79,000 X”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Stone?” says Leavitt, walking into the lab. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What do you think?” asks Stone, pointing at the screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
