“Try to stay calm,” says Stone. He turns off the intercom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What happened?” asks Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The seal must have broken in there,” says Stone. “The same thing happened at the Lunar Lab. That’s why we used polychron gaskets here. At least the rest of Wildfire is secure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Poor devil,” says Hall. “Look at the way he’s breathing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He’s scared to death,” says Stone. “The oxygen should relax him, slow down his breathing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No – – we want him to breathe fast!” says Hall, realizing something. “In Piedmont, Jackson was crocked on Sterno. Sterno, acidosis. Acidosis, rapid breathing!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What the hell are you doing?” says Stone, as Hall starts pressing buttons on the console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Turning off the oxygen. Put him on room air,” says Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The baby!” says Stone. “He’s normal!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Cries all the time, can’t catch his breath,” replies Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Rapid breathing?” says Stone. “Oh, it just can’t be that simple!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It isn’t,” says Hall, turning the intercom back on. “Dutton, I think rapid breathing helps. Don’t let the bug in your lungs long enough to penetrate blood vessels. I want to turn off the pure oxygen. Then you start breathing room air as fast as you can.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
