“Exterminating,” explains Stone.
“Jeremy,” replies Dutton, “on this matter of extermination, we should go slowly. Without ever realizing it, we might be destroying a highly intelligent form of life.”
“Why don’t we get going?” asks Hall. “I’ve got two patients down there.”
“The team has two subjects,” corrects Stone.
“They’re not guinea pigs, Stone!” rebukes Hall.
“You may now proceed to Level Five, gentlemen,” says a recorded announcement. Leavitt laughs at the recorded message. They all stand and head for the door of the cafeteria.
Stone reaches into a jar filled with suppositories. “Um,” he says,”stop by your rooms and insert these before taking the elevator.”
Leavitt examines the capsule. “I’ve risked drowning in that foul bath,” she says, “I’ve been par-boiled, irradiated, and xenon flashed. And now you suggest I -“
“I have to,” replies Stone. “We haven’t done a thing about the GI tract yet. On Level Five we must be as nearly germ-free as possible.”
Levitt holds the suppository like a cigarette between her fingers. “Anyone care to join me for a smoke?” she asks.
TITLE: LEVEL FIVE… 4:33 A.M.
“Watchdog to Level Two, Sector D,” says an announcement. “You are Red Kappa Phoenix status.”
The Wildfire graphic display appears on a monitor.
“Off the main corridor, on the outer rim,” explains Dutton.
