“…in MP4. Repeat: Negative N-Scan, Negative N-Scope in LY-One. Affirmative M indicator in MP4,” says an announcement.

Stone lowers a large rat in a cage to the metal floor of the glove box. He uses a waldo to lift the door of the cage, exposing the rat to the lab room air. The rat takes a few sniffs of the air, then falls over. Dutton says something unheard through the lab window.

“Whatever killed them in Piedmont is still there, and still as potent as ever,” says Stone.

“If potent’s the word,” adds Leavitt. “Let’s try a rhesus.”

“Yeah, we’ll want a post-mortem on it anyway,” says Stone. He works the control panel for the animal cages, and a large cage containing a rhesus monkey moves forward on the shelf. Stone grabs the container with the rhesus using a waldo, and lowers the cage to the lab floor.

“Housekeeping to Level Five,” says an announcement, “Clean sweep schedule B now in effect.”
