“There’s no substation in this sector!” yells Stone.
Hall and Stone scramble into the Level V corridor. They run toward a closing door. The door closes before they can reach the exit. Turning around, they head in the opposite direction, only to see that section of the corridor also being sealed off.
An announcement: “LEVEL FIVE IS SEALED. LEVEL FIVE IS SEALED. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES ARE IN EFFECT.”
“When the bomb goes off, there’ll be a thousand mutations. Andromeda will spread everywhere. They’ll never be rid of it!” says Stone.
The wall clock shows a red arc, indicates five minutes for the countdown.
Announcement by Gladys Stevens: “THERE ARE NOW FIVE MINUTES TO SELF-DESTRUCT.”
“What about the other levels?” asks Hall.
“Can’t tell,” says Stone. “Each sector seals off when it’s contaminated. Even the elevator.”
Stone looks at an unfinished disarming key box, marked “Substation 5-004.”
“The defense system is perfect, Mark,” says Stone. “It’ll even bury our mistakes.”
“What about the central core?” asks Hall, running up the corridor. The two men duck into the Miscellaneous room, containing the baby and Peter Jackson.
“The core is equipped with safeguards,” replies Stone.
“Like what?” asks Hall.
“Gas, lasers, to prevent the escape of lab animals,” says Stone.
“What would my chances be in there?” asks Hall.
“Well, they don’t exists for anyone, anywhere if you stay here,” replies Stone.
“How -” begins Hall.
