“Proceed directly to Wildfire,” says Dempsey, “and then – – cckckckc!” Dempsey draws his hand across his throat.
Hall looks at Stone, puzzled.
“If we’re eliminated,” says Stone. “the aircraft and pilot will have to be sterilized.”
“Uh, wait a minute,” says Dempsey. “That’s not what they told me. Just – – incinerated.”
Stone drops a rope ladder off the side of the helicopter, as Dempsey hovers in front of the Piedmont church. Clouds of dust billow.
Stone and Hall stand in front of the church as the dust settles. The helicopter gains altitude and the two men are left alone in the silence of Piedmont.
A dead man, with his eye plucked out by vultures, lays face-up in front of the church. Hall and Stone look at him, while Dempsey’s helicopter remains at a distance.
