In the Scoop control room, Leavitt aims the camera inside the satellite. She raises her eyeglasses for a moment, rubs her eyes, and looks up at the large wall monitor.
The monitor shows the slowly moving field of view inside the capsule as shown by the microscanner, labeled “20 x”.
Stone watches the same display on the other wall monitor.
“Hold it,” says Stone. The camera pauses. “At the edge of that shadow – – I think–“
“Me too,” says Leavitt.
“It’s an indentation,” says Stone.
“Yes,” agrees Leavitt. “About the size of a pencil point.”
“Go to forty,” says Stone. Leavitt punches buttons. The scene magnifies. There’s a small bean-shaped rock in the indentation.
